5 Fall Tips for Healthy Kids (and adults too!!)

Autumn is here! We love the fall, but we don’t love the colds that come with it. Here are some awesome tips I learned from Dr. John Doulliard, that are now tried and true,  with a sprinkling of my own. Wishing you all a season of good health and blessing.

1.Moisture.  In fall the air is drier. When the mucous membranes dry out, our bodies produce reactive mucous that predisposes kids to colds.

  • Use a cold air humidifier every night to keep mucous membranes moist.
  • Swab a good oil (Andreas Black sesame oil and coconut oil are both anti bacterial, but extra virgin olive oil works too) with a Q-tip around the inside of their nostrils, morning and night.
  • Put a drop of warmed ear oil (preferably one made with garlic available in the health food store) in each ear, every night. Do it while they sleep if necessary.  This lubricates Eustachian tubes, which helps support better lymph flow and aids upper respiratory immunity.
  • Use lots of Coconut oil in your cooking, it is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and so healthy for your cells, skin, and brain.

2. Sleep. Getting enough rest is absolutely essential.  If we are not properly                 rested our immunity will suffer. Kids need their rest. Pre-high school age children should be sleeping by 8:00. High school age should be asleep by 10:00.

3. Hydration.  Avoid dehydration.  Put water bottles in kids lunch. Make sure they drink a big glass of water in the morning and a big glass in the afternoon. Each day they should have ½ their ideal body weight in ounces.

Dehydration causes:

  • Stomach aches
  • Bone loss
  • Hormonal problems
  • Obesity
  • Fatigue
  • Mood swings
  • Poor ability to focus
  • Skin conditions
  • And more.

4.  Digestion and elimination.  Colds start in the digestive system. It is important to track your child’s elimination and know when they “go”. 1-2 times daily is normal.

Up the water and vegetables, if bowel movements are not in the normal range.  Sluggish bowels cause the villi of the gut to become congested.

5.   Proper nutrition.  Control mood and focus with food. The middle of the day is the best time to eat the largest meal because this is the time the body can digest most efficiently. This can be tough for school age kids.

In the afternoon when America is craving chocolate and coffee, the brain needs energy, especially when lunch was an insufficient snack. Blood sugar may then crash in the afternoon. Don’t just give your kids  a sugary snack when they get home from school. Have a large meal ready for them when they get home.

They need energy for afternoon activities and homework.

It is also good because they will have ample time to digest before bed.

Offer them lots of nutritional veggies. The best way to get them    to eat vegetables is monkey see, monkey do. Mom and Dad have to eat lots and lots of vegetables, it works , the kids will want them as well.

Big Fat Lie #2 Polyunsaturated fats (PUFA’s) are good for your health.

  • Polyunsaturated Fats (PUFA’s) became popular with the agricultural industry.  They wanted a low cost way to speed up growth and fatten livestock.
  • At first farmers began feeding the livestock coconut oil, a cheap saturated fat, and guess what?  They ended up losing weight instead of gaining it!
  • They then turned to PUFA’s and found they gained weight quickly.
  • The downside was that the livestock were becoming sick and often died before slaughter. Nothin’ a boatload of antibiotics wouldn’t take care of.
  • Mad cow disease has been linked to the neurological damage that PUFA’s can have.
  • By the way, Mad Cow Disease and Alzheimers Disease have also been linked.
  • Farmers solved the problem with antibiotics and vitamin E.  They kept the livestock alive long enough to get to slaughter.
  • Polyunsaturated fats worked great for farmers, must be good for us too, right? HA!

PUFAs can be a real Jekyll and Hyde. On the one hand, PUFAs include the essential fatty acids, including our favorite omega 3.  But when oxidation comes into play, we’re looking at a whole different animal. Heating in particular sets a bad course in motion, but simply exposure to air, light and even moisture can incite the process. We’re now looking at lipid peroxides, which initiate a free radical free-for-all.

The free radicals make their way through the body pillaging at every turn. Their damage takes a toll on everything from cell membranes, to DNA/RNA strands, to blood vessels (which can then lead to plaque accumulation). The harm adds up over time in the organs and systems of the body and can cause significant impact, including premature aging and skin disease, liver damage, immune dysfunction, and even cancer.

Common Health Problems Tied to Polyunsaturated Fats

  1.  Hypothyroidism
  2. Diabetes
  3. Cancer
  4. Heart Disease
  5. Obesity
  6. Hormonal Imbalances
  7. Accelerated Aging
  8. Insomnia
  9. Brain Swelling
  10. Alzheimer’s Disease
  11. Early Puberty
  12. Age Pigment of Skin
  13. Learn Disabilities
  14. Cataracts
  15. Cirrhosis
  16. Muscle Wasting
  17. Excitatory State
  18. Inflammation
  19. Cellulite
  20. Autoimmune Disease
  21. Deterioration of Gonads
  22. Edema
  23. Retinal Degeneration

Sources of Polyunsaturated Fats

Soybean Oil, Corn Oil, Safflower Oil, Canola Oil, Sesame Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil, Flax Oil, Peanut Oil, Cottonseed Oil, Almond Oil, and any other polyunsaturated or unsaturated oil (except Olive Oil).

So guess what I just made? My very own homemade mayonnaise!!! It’s so easy and tastes really great! I had no choice. I couldn’t find any that did not have bad oils in them. So in literally 2 minutes I made my very own, with olive oil and coconut oil. check out my recipe.

As far as added fats, I only eat organic cultured butter, coconut oil, and olive oil. It’s tricky to find any packaged foods that don’t have the junky oils, even in the health food stores.

When I am going to eat out and I know I don’t have control over what oils I will be getting in my food, I take 100 IU of vitamin E to protect myself.

Watch how coconut oil reverses Alzheimers Disease.

Yes!! You Are Good Enough!!!

So what is it with those little voices inside many of us, that tell us we are not good enough?  We all know realistically that we are pretty darn good at a lot of things, but someone at sometime, early on, very clearly gave us that “not good enough” feeling.  Now I got the Not Good Enough Blues!! (would be a cute song, huh?)

Did you ever just want to fly swat that little voice and make it go away? Well I have an awesome fly swatter. It’s EFT, tapping. It is actually possible to make that ridiculous voice LEAVE!

Of course it’s always better to use an EFT Coach, like me (wink, wink) to help you sort through those early years and determine which aspects and experiences to tap on, but I am going to take you through the process.

First find the earliest experience you can remember that gave you that “I’m not good enough” feeling. Hint: It usually has to do with your parents and/or siblings.

Go through the experience like a movie and hit the pause button when you feel the strongest emotional response.  Rate your emotional intensity from 1-10 and identify where you are feeling it in your body.

Next, form a set up statement as you tap on the karate chop point.(see below for chart, and tapping video for a demonstration) It sounds like “Even though (my mother made me feel not good enough) fill in with your story, I still love and accept myself. Tap as you repeat 3 times.

Follow all the tapping points as you verbalize the problem. After each round notice how the intensity number gets lower and the physical symptom begins to lessen.

If you are able to get the emotional intensity down to a zero, well congratulations!!  You are now the proud new owner of a new kind of memory, one that it doesn’t hurt to think about.

Many people find that as they get issues tapped out, their responses to many things in life change.  My clients have told me they are calmer, more patient, and not as defensive as before. I love when a client tells me they feel “lighter and free”.

My own response to this exact tapping sequence was in my eyes miraculous! I lost all my fears about putting myself out there, authentically.  I never could have believed that would happen from tapping. It still amazes me!

I know it won’t help much but I will say it anyway.  YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH! Each person has gifts and talents that the world needs and you are the only YOU who can express those gifts to the world. So if you have anything holding you back, GET TAPPING!!

Love and hugs and tap,tap,tap,

JOY

Snack, Anyone?

What should we give our kids for school snacks?

The questions we have to ask ourselves are;

How do we keep our children’s blood sugar level so they are not bouncing off the walls and then falling asleep in class?

How do we give them the maximum nutrition to keep their brains functioning all day?

What do our kids need in between meals to maintain focus and concentration?

The answers to these questions are one and the same. They need a good source of protein, a quality source of fat, and either a fruit or vegetable source for energy.

If  your children are young, you can probably get away with a small avocado salad with cucumbers and tomatoes and a hard boiled egg.  Older kids may feel self conscious and would do better with one of my apple zucchini (grain-free) muffins.

One important point I want to make is that grains play havoc with blood sugar.  I would recommend leaving all grain products out of the equation.  The best snack would be a grain free one.  Another important point is that a snack should be a small meal not a treat. A treat should be something to have on occasion. So here we go:

-An apple and a tbsp. of raw almond butter

– a slice of banana paleo bread

-a grain-free apple zucchini muffin

– a small salad with chicken or fish strips or sliced egg, avocado and yummy dressing

– a small collard green wrap with tuna, egg or chicken, avocado and sprouts

– you can use a cabbage leaf or lettuce leaves for the above wrap

-chicken ,turkey or beef sliders, good quality ketchup, some black pitted olives and cut veggies

-Kefir with cut apples, pears, berries or melon, topped with grain-free granola

-zucchini pancakes

-apple sauce with slivered almonds and shredded coconut

-raw coconut wraps with nut butter and sliced bananas.

-fruit salad with walnuts and shredded coconut

-guacamole with grated egg and carrots and peppers to dip

-mixed berries with toasted coconut flakes and nuts

-Egg salad or chicken salad in a bell pepper

-roasted chicken gourmettes and sliced vegetables

-whole Kirby cucumber seeded and then stuffed with tuna or egg salad

-spinach strawberry and walnut salad with raspberry vinaigrette

guilt-free pizza bites with pizza sauce dip.

paleo pancakes

– organic apple chips or zucchini chips or sweet potato fries can be added to the snacks above.

See what your children prefer from the list and use your imagination to come up with new and interesting choices.  Share them with us here in the comments below. We’d  love to hear!

By choosing your childs snacks wisely you are helping their education and their health!!  Their teachers will thank you !

Big FAT Lie #1 (big lie about fat)

The entire campaign against the use of saturated fats began in the 1950’s when a

Doctor named Ancel Keys distorted his studies to show that countries with higher

Saturated fat consumption had higher rates of heart disease.

 ( See video.)

So people got scared of using traditional saturated fats like butter, coconut oil, meats, and  tallow and started using cheaper polyunsaturated fats like soybean oil, corn oil, safflower oil, and  canola oil.

So for the past 60 years, we’ve all been shakin’ in our boots over FAT!  Fat-free this, fat-free that.

Our Brains are made up of Fat! How can they work properly without fats in our diet?  Saturated fats compose 50% of our cell membranes!

And guess which fats end up being the healthiest? The ones we have been eating for thousands of years!! Yes sir, saturated fats are the best, coconut oil, butter, and saturated animal fat. Oh yea, and some old fashioned extra virgin olive oil on cold salads.

But don’t take my word for it, change your oil!! Do it for one month and see what happens, you will be amazed! I have been seeing crazy results for things like depression, hypothyroidism, arthritis, diabetes, memory loss, alzheimers disease, acne etc.  Let me know how it works for you!   Bet you will never change back!

One of my clients told me people are telling her she glows! She is diggin’ the butter!

Just a few little tips:       -Use only organic cultured butter.

– Use Tropical Traditions coconut oil- it’s the best!

– Use only extra virgin olive oil, organic if you can.

–  Never heat olive oil.

–  Avocados and olives are fine.

Shocking News About Veganism

Fred and Wilma Flintstone, my favorite Paleo couple.

Could the so-called healthiest diet in the world actually make you SICK and FAT?!

I happen to love the whole moral argument and I mean LOVE!  YUP you heard me right.  I loved my whole grains, my Ezekiel bread and my brown rice pasta. Uh Huh. Who wants to eat animals? Pffff.

However, I’ve recently proven to myself  (remember I am a human science project) that veganism is not best for me…at all!

But never mind me, I have heard that certain celebs i.e. Ginnifer Goodwin and Megan Fox , recently defected and (presumably) went back to some meat eatin’.

Now really which Ginnifer looks better? Top is when she was vegan, bottom was when she started eating meat again……….just kidding!! But it very well could be ;).

So I’ve been asking around, to some of my fellow Health Coaches to see what they think. The word around town is PALEO baby, thats right . Some meat, eggs, fish, vegetables, good fats and fruit. The finest quality you can find, organic and fresh.

Most people do great for a while on a vegan diet. 6 months to a year and then it all starts breaking down. Mineral deficiency, low energy, inflammation and what happened to me…dum dum dum…hypothyroidism.

In my quest to heal my body of this hypo-craziness I have uncovered my truth. Soy, grains, beans and legumes as well as polyunsaturated oils do not support good health.

I know its not politically correct, and its not the popular way right now, but as people’s thyroids and bones crash down around them, they will have no choice but to change their tune.

Take a look at Dr. Terry Wahls who healed herself of debilitating Muscular Sclerosis by eating a hunter-gatherer diet. It’s truly amazing.

I was a vegan for 10 years before I completely fell apart. A macrobiotic consultant forced me back on animal protein, I was so weak and mineral deficient.

Years later I found out about phytic acid and soaking grains and beans. I figured I never did that correctly back in the day, and I could be vegan once again (see my post “soak soak soak your grains”) Wrong! As long as I was eating grains and beans, my weight and cholesterol levels could not be contained.

So I am grain-free and eating a hunter-gatherer diet.

For the first time in my life, my weight dropped and stayed down! Does. Not. Budge. Yay!

My blood-work looks awesome, my thyroid is actually healing, joints in my thumbs were inflamed and now look and feel so much better.

Stay tuned, I will give you the whole low down.  In the coming weeks we will explore all the problems with soy,  grains and other “vegan” foods and see what our healthiest options are.

Big Fat Lie #1 is next.………

Not Tap Dancing… Tapping!!!

Last week I was mentioning that I had been tapping with a client and someone said “How nice! Tap dancing is so much fun!” I was referring to EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique- that tapping! I guess those people haven’t heard of it, but it is quickly gaining ground. Tapping is an amazing modality that can be used on emotional trauma, anxiety, and physical pain too! I even use it on emotional eating and cravings. Honestly we should try it on anything and everything. The process is simple, and I have been seeing profound effects when I coach clients. A group…

The Audrey Hepburn Challenge

We all know a skinny, elegant woman. The Audrey Hepburn type.  What are the refined and healthy secrets that keep her that way?  Well I’ll tell you because I have a few great role models that I’ve studied very carefully.  I am trying so hard to use these secrets.  They don’t come naturally to me. I’m a natural born gobbler, but I’m happy to say I’m making progress. If I can do it, anyone can! Heres the challenge: For the next few weeks make believe you are an actress playing the role of Audrey Hepburn as a french woman in…

Whole Spelt Pizzas

Whole spelt pizzas with peppers and onions and spinach……mmmmmmm good holiday ideas for a light meal, when you have 6 in a row………:)

O boy!!!! Everywhere……Soy!!!!!

So here I am learning how bad soy is, the phytoestrogens and how they wreak havoc on the thyroid, etc. I was telling my loved ones to please check their cupboards and make sure they do NOT eat soy!!!! Soy oil , soy lecithin and soy beans are hidden in every processed food! These soy products have been proven time and time again to scramble up all the hormone responses in the body! I really thought I was free of soy. I have soy-free veganaise and soy-free icecream.  Then I got some crazed feedback “WHAT……Its in EVERYTHING!!!!!!” So I started…
