Discipline; the Engine that gets you to good health

One of the biggest roles I play as a health coach is motivator. So many clients want to feel better and see changes in their health but in the beginning they just can’t seem to resist the ice-cream or the chocolate or fill in the blank with your fave food. Part of it is physical addiction but the biggest hurdle is plain old discipline.

One of the best things I have developed through my life is strong discipline. It’s because of lots of self talk that says “Joy it’s not worth it!”  Whether it was watching the pounds or detoxing.

I believe the most important thing is to ask yourself “Self, what is your motivation?” And make sure you give yourself one heck of an answer.

We can talk ourselves into or out of anything.  It all comes down to your motivation. It has to be strong and it has to be purposeful.

Once, I healed a bad case of gastritis with diet.  I learned to de-stress with yoga, breath deeply, and I followed a strict diet of protein, vegetables and good fats. Discipline was key. I had important goals I did not, no, would not mess up. The choice was stay on medication that could destroy my digestion for life or heal naturally. I’d say that’s a strong motivation, especially when you have a family who depends on you.

The only way to whole-body health is by harnessing your discipline and putting into action all the knowledge you know will change everything.

There is a sense of power and happiness that comes from dedication to your self.

We have to grow up and realize that choices have consequences and the world owes you nothing.

Make good choices about the foods you eat and smarter choices about lifestyle. Add movement into your day, consciously relax; meditate or tap away stress. This stuff is so life changing its crazy. Most people need support to stay with it at the beginning.  Once you start and see the symptoms change its so much easier.

So define your motivation. What is it for you?

Welcome to Holland

A young mother gives birth. She knows this child well. This baby kicked and moved about and the mother understood the child’s special energy. Sometimes, between the 1st and 4th birthday typically, some children receive a dreaded diagnosis of a spectrum disorder.
The feelings a mother has at a time like this are fear, and worry, maybe panic. The beautiful  “Welcome to Holland” story says it like no other.

I love this mom’s analogy. She describes having a child with a disability like planning a trip to Italy but ending up in Holland. It’s not bad, it’s just different. It’s not what you were expecting and now you have to navigate this new place with no itinerary.

A health coach is like your travel agent/ concierge. We help you navigate Holland and help to make it the best trip ever.

(read “Welcome to Holland” HERE)

I am guessing that a lot of parents would like to take back the responsibility and control of their child’s situation.  That is where we come in. Those of you who have been reading my blog know I believe very strongly that the brain and gut are totally linked together.  We work to help with the challenges of diet change and behavioral issues.  The results, healing and behavoiral changes  have been astounding.  We begin with the following challenges.

Challenge #1– knowing what you can and cannot eat.

What really happens; often when people begin they look at a long laundry list of stuff they can’t eat. So they feel deprived, confused and HUNGRY.

What a Coach does; We help navigate the whole landscape of new foods. We translate old unhealthy choices into healthful ones. We menu plan and answer questions in emails and emergency texts from the grocery store.   We help to create substitutes for favorite foods that are delicious, satisfying and easy.

Challenge #2- slowly incorporating different ways to detoxify and change the digestion.

What really happens; people take on these tasks and they start to feel like it’s a full time job.

What a Coach does; We help develop a doable routine that is fun and easy.

Challenge #3-rebuilding gut flora;

What really happens; every member in the family, because of the changes being implemented, feels the resistance.

What a Coach does; We try to meet the emotional needs of all family members and give support with solutions that become part of day-to-day life.

Yes there are challenges, but with the right support a parent can meet them with a smile, and take back control of their child’s health and healing.  One of my favorite Client Mom’s recently told me “Had I known how easy my life was going to be, I would have welcomed the challenges with open arms!”

What’s Eating You?

Whether we have an addiction to dieting, binging, work, drinking or drugs; Or if we act out by getting angry,  it is widely known that our emotions and feelings are underneath it all.

We all don’t like to feel unpleasant emotions. It’s easier to stuff them down with food, or raise our adrenaline with other things, which kind of helps us escape the pain. Those behaviors actually change brain chemistry, temporarily, until the feelings resurface (which they will).

This week I did an experiment with myself. I was feeling very down and when I am in that state, I usually try to find a new diet or approach to eating, (which I find extremely exciting). It is an escape and sends my adrenaline way up. It also distracts me.

This time I said no to that.  I even said no to tapping.  I chose to stay in pain and feel my feelings.  No suppression. No escape. Just felt the feelings.  To my surprise, it wasn’t all that bad! The next day I woke up much happier, with my usual sunny outlook.

My feelings were fully felt, had their say, and moved on. It is amazing.

I am starting to believe it can be less painful, and less complicated to feel than to suppress and deal with the aftermath and drama.

In my research to help clients with anger, binging and other destructive behaviors, that is always the advice from the experts like Marianne Williamson and Gene Monterastelli; Identify your feelings.

Shame

Anger

Fear

Unforgiveness

Judgement

Disdain

Excess responsibility

Pressure

Exhaustion

Burden

Stress

Heartbreak

The list goes on. I agree that many feelings take time and can be helped with tapping. But, even tapping is so much more effective when we can be really specific and identify our feelings.

So next time you feel like running away from a painful emotion; stop, identify and feel.  (It’s like stop, drop and roll at a fire, and just as scary).  Try to be courageous; it is never as bad as we think it will be.

Before you binge and eat your feelings, please ask, “What’s eating you?”.

Anger management

Hey guys, as you know I am an AAMET Certified EFT Coach, a tapping coach.

I help people release negative emotional problems. One of the most disturbing

problems that people struggle with is ANGER.

I recently bought and read an amazing workbook that was developed for prison inmates. These inmates are working with Gene Monterastelli, the author, in a highly successful program. Gene does this on a volunteer basis, God bless him.

For every book you purchase 4 books will be given to prison inmates to support the effort.

I noticed, in the book, that Gene thanks my mentor Jondi Whitis for her help and contributions. A big shout out to Jondi!

I just have to say this is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. It is not just for inmates, that’s for sure!

Reading this book was a very big awakening for me. Here I was researching the best way to help a client who has an “anger problem” and I discovered that I too, have lots to work on for myself in this area.  I have to say I think of myself as a very even tempered person.  Reading “Comprehensive Anger Management” helped me see where the poisonous anger does take hold of me, and now I also have a clear path to grow and improve.

The way Gene dissects and pulls apart the process of getting angry, the way he shows you how to consider the choices that are available to people during this process is truly amazing! This is a Life changing workbook. The instructions on how to tap for anger are clear and understandable.

Consider purchasing a copy of this truly helpful book for yourself or someone you love.   You can order here:    https://www.createspace.com/4186443

Read the book!! Create space!! Tap and heal!

Yes!! You Are Good Enough!!!

So what is it with those little voices inside many of us, that tell us we are not good enough?  We all know realistically that we are pretty darn good at a lot of things, but someone at sometime, early on, very clearly gave us that “not good enough” feeling.  Now I got the Not Good Enough Blues!! (would be a cute song, huh?)

Did you ever just want to fly swat that little voice and make it go away? Well I have an awesome fly swatter. It’s EFT, tapping. It is actually possible to make that ridiculous voice LEAVE!

Of course it’s always better to use an EFT Coach, like me (wink, wink) to help you sort through those early years and determine which aspects and experiences to tap on, but I am going to take you through the process.

First find the earliest experience you can remember that gave you that “I’m not good enough” feeling. Hint: It usually has to do with your parents and/or siblings.

Go through the experience like a movie and hit the pause button when you feel the strongest emotional response.  Rate your emotional intensity from 1-10 and identify where you are feeling it in your body.

Next, form a set up statement as you tap on the karate chop point.(see below for chart, and tapping video for a demonstration) It sounds like “Even though (my mother made me feel not good enough) fill in with your story, I still love and accept myself. Tap as you repeat 3 times.

Follow all the tapping points as you verbalize the problem. After each round notice how the intensity number gets lower and the physical symptom begins to lessen.

If you are able to get the emotional intensity down to a zero, well congratulations!!  You are now the proud new owner of a new kind of memory, one that it doesn’t hurt to think about.

Many people find that as they get issues tapped out, their responses to many things in life change.  My clients have told me they are calmer, more patient, and not as defensive as before. I love when a client tells me they feel “lighter and free”.

My own response to this exact tapping sequence was in my eyes miraculous! I lost all my fears about putting myself out there, authentically.  I never could have believed that would happen from tapping. It still amazes me!

I know it won’t help much but I will say it anyway.  YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH! Each person has gifts and talents that the world needs and you are the only YOU who can express those gifts to the world. So if you have anything holding you back, GET TAPPING!!

Love and hugs and tap,tap,tap,

JOY
